In the first 4 months of 2010 we will be building and installing a wind turbine at the Iona school in Nottingham. We will meet every fortnight for 4 hours for a total of 10 sessions. The final session will be putting it all together and errecting it on the tower we've built in the schools garden.
Each session will cost £40 with a discount available for block-bookings. This money will be used to cover the costs of the materials and pay the instructors wages. The first half hour of each session will be theory based with the remainder being hands on and practical - although there will be plenty of oportunity to ask questions throughout.
A brief breakdown of the sessions is as follows:
Weeks 1-3 Blade carving - using hand tools to carve the three 1.2m blades from douglas fir.
Weeks 4-6 Alternator building - winding the copper coils, constructing the moulds and casting the alternator components in fibreglass.
Weeks 7, 8 - Metal work - shaping and welding the metal for the mounting and tower
Week 9 - Putting it all together, painting it and preparing it for installation
Week 10 - preparing the ground and erecting the turbine!
